Symphony Storytime

Mesa County Public Library   530 Grand Avenue, 81501

Symphony Storytime kicks off Saturday, September 27th with Barbara Garriel’s I Know A Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello

The Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra and Mesa County Libraries continue their unique collaboration, Symphony Storytime, at the Downtown Library Branch on Saturday, September 27th at 10am.

Young children learn about the history, sounds and instruments of the orchestra through storytelling, music demonstrations by GJSO musicians and the Instrument Petting Zoo which gives children the opportunity to try an instrument for themselves.

This Saturday’s Symphony Storytime will focus on string instruments, specifically the cello and will feature the book I Know A Shy Fellow Who Swallowed a Cello. From a Google Books review; This shy fellow, a wallflower, swallows a cello, followed by many more musical instruments, until at last he burps, belches, and bellows. Imagine how the instruments make music this way. Using her love of words and music, Barbara S. Garriel has created a zany and wild new look at an old favorite, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly, and added a surprise ending.

Cello maker and Grand Junction Symphony Board Member Chris Dungey will give a short talk on how a cello produces sound and his process for creating the instrument. A cellist from the GJSO will also perform a short piece. Following the performances, children will have an opportunity to play a cello during the Instrument Petting Zoo.

This a free event designed for pre-school and elementary aged students.

Join us this Saturday, September 27th at 10am for Symphony Storytime at the Downtown branch of the Mesa County Public Library.
